How to prevent or lessen bruises

Eat foods that are rich in protein (think lean meats and Greek yogurt) and vitamins C and K (both found in kale and broccoli), since low levels of these nutrients can make you more prone to bruising, says Randy Wexler, M.D., an associate professor of family medicine at Ohio State University College of Medicine. And avoid aspirin—a blood thinner—unless taking it is absolutely necessary.

Applying ice right away can lessen a bruise, but once one forms, a heating pad can help your body reabsorb blood that has pooled at the surface. If you constantly spot unexplained bruises, or if heavier periods or bloody noses accompany them, see your doctor ASAP. These could be signs of an underlying blood disorder or liver disease, says Wexler.
